All About Cavities!

So, today I’m going to talk about the topic which is the most common dental problem faced by almost every single person! It’s TOOTH DECAY or CAVITIES.

So what exactly are cavities?

In simple words, its just some bad bacteria stuck with great food on your tooth, and once they feel that your tooth is getting a bit weak and is ready to be invaded, BOOM! They start attacking. And there’s no going back after that, of course if you recognize this initially, you might get successful in reversing it, but its really difficult to know what’s actually going on inside your tooth, unless it starts turning into something visible (like black discoloration), and there’s no reversal possible after that!

How can you prevent cavities?

  1. So, your number one friend which can help you to prevent cavities is TOOTHBRUSHING! I know I keep saying that but I cannot emphasize enough on how important brushing your teeth twice can be.

  2. Now even if you are brushing your teeth, are you DOING IT RIGHT? Well, for the best results you need to make sure you brush at least for 2 minutes every time you’re doing it. And follow a proper method instead of just traumatizing your teeth even more by just rubbing the brush against it.

  3. The third and a very important thing which many of us don’t know about is FLOURIDE. That’s the real game changer guys! Next time when you’re out to buy toothpaste or mouthwash, you need to make sure there is Fluoride content in it. It can be in the form of Stannous Fluoride or Sodium Fluoride.

  4. Also, what you eat does make a difference here! According to researches, your mouth stays acidic for half an hour after every time you eat any kind of SUGAR, and acidic environment makes your teeth weak, which gives a chance to bacteria to invade your teeth and cause decay. So even if you are having all those things, you need to make sure you at least gargle properly after eating or drinking them, so that at least all the sugar is physically washed off.

You can also gargle every morning, with warm water and salt. Along with all the other benefits associated with your throat, it also helps to keep your mouth alkaline, and hence can help in prevention of cavities.

5. Also, there are very few people may get cavities even after following all these steps, it might be associated with the shape of your teeth, genetics etc. For such people, the best way to prevent it is to get PIT AND FISSURE SEALANTS placed in the teeth by the dentist before the process of tooth decay begins. That’s one of the most reliable preventive treatment dentists provide to prevent future risk of cavities.

What if you already have a cavity?

What are you supposed to do if you see a cavity in your mouth? Can it be treated or reversed at home? If you are wondering that, let me tell you NO, it cannot be reversed by medications of in-home remedies. The only way you can stop its progression and save yourself from the future pain and suffering is getting it treated by a dentist at the earliest. Where the decayed area of the tooth is removed and a filling is placed instead of the lost tooth structure!

TOOTH-DECAY IS NOT SOMETHING YOU NEED TO PANIC ABOUT. IT’S A VERY BASIC PROBLEM THAT ALMOST EVERYONE SUFFERS WITH. HOWEVER, IGNORANCE EVEN AFTER THE INITIATION OF DECAY CAN LEAD TO SOME SEVERE PROBLEMS LIKE PAIN, SWELLING ETC. SO, THE BEST SOLUTION IS TO INSTEAD PREVENT THE TOOTH DECAY BY FOLLOWING SIMPLE MEASURES LISTED ABOVE AND EVEN IF YOU’VE GOT A DECAY, VISIT YOUR DENTIST AT THE EARLIEST AND GET IT TREATED.
