Dentist's Opinion on Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is a practice originated from ancient ayurvedic medicine which has a number of health benefits including oral health. I’ve been practicing it myself for a month now and I can definitely see some serious changes in my health which I’m going to share with you today.


CORRECT METHOD OF OIL PULLING:

  1. Take a spoon of oil in your mouth.

  2. Swish it around your mouth for 10-15 minutes.

  3. So, after 10-15 minutes or once it has expanded to an extent when you cannot hold it in your mouth anymore. Spit it out.

Now, you can do it anytime in the day but it shows best results when done in the morning right after you wake up in addition to your other oral hygiene practices.


CARE TO BE TAKEN:

  1. You have to take care and not swallow the oil because it contains all your toxins and bacteria and can be harmful to you if swallowed.

  2. After you are done with oil pulling, you cannot spit it in your sink because it solidifies later on and can clog your sink. You can take an old paper, spit the oil in it and dispose of it in your dustbin.

  3. Rinse your mouth properly before eating drinking anything after oil pulling.


OIL TO BE USED: Cold pressed coconut, sesame, or olive oil.


HOW EXACTLY OIL PULLING WORKS?


According to Ayurveda, the majority of toxins and bacteria present in your body have their outermost layer made up of fat. And as you already know, when oil is mixed with oil, it attracts each other. The exact same theory is used here. When you perform this practice, the oil in your mouth attracts all the toxins and harmful bacteria present in your body and accumulates in your mouth which you eventually spit out after 10-15 minutes. You can actually feel the suction in your throat while doing it.


Also, oil pulling activates some naturally present chemicals in your spit (salivary enzymes) which absorb toxins from the blood.


ORAL HEALTH BENEFITS:

  1. As the bacterial load is reduced, it makes you less prone to tooth decay.

  2. Also, it prevents gum diseases if clubbed with toothbrushing and flossing due to decreased bacterial load in your mouth.

  3. Because of the same reason mentioned above, it also prevents bad breath.

  4. It helps to keep your teeth white, as it does not let your teeth get stained. Now, by the whitening, it only restores the natural color of your tooth and does not let it get any darker.

  2. Improved digestion

  3. Prevents throat infections

  4. Prevents respiratory infection.

Studies also show that this method has some antimicrobial effect as conventional mouthwashes recommended by dentists. That’s the reason nowadays there are many dentists who recommend oil pulling along with other oral hygiene practices like toothbrushing and flossing.


This process naturally detoxifies your body every day. And also, if you feel it’s not causing any benefits to your health you can simply discontinue because it has no side effects. That’s the reason I decided to try it myself before I recommend it. But this method has actually worked wonders for a number of people including me and I definitely recommend it.
